Spring Maintenance Tips

The first official day of spring is here, and since Wiarton Willie predicted an early spring this year, it’s the perfect time to share our top spring home maintenance tips.

Check your gutters and downspouts

Clogged gutters and downspouts can cause water backups that can damage your roof, causing leaks. These in turn can lead to cracks in walls and foundations. That's why it's important to inspect and clean your gutter, roof, and downspout systems twice a year, we recommend during the fall and spring.

Fix cracks in your walls and foundation

March, April, and May are typically rainy months in Canada, and this year will be no different. This is why it is so important to fix any cracks that may have occurred in your foundation during the winter. Sealing any cracks will help avoid water damage or a flood in your home during the wettest part of the year.

Inspect roof shingles

Examine roof shingles to see if any were lost or damaged during winter. Your roof is the biggest protection your home and belongings have, a weak roof puts everything at risk. Regularly inspecting your roof, and doing any small replacements and maintenance when noticed, will not just prevent water damage in your home, it will also prolong the lifespan of your roof.

Check the smoke and carbon monoxide alarms

Spring is the perfect time to so one of your twice annual checks of your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Make sure they are working correctly and change the batteries if needed. In an emergency situation every second counts and working alarms will keep you, your family, and your home safe.

Check the AC

Make sure your air conditioner or HVAC system is working and ready for the summer. Clean out any dust and debris from around it, check that power is working correctly, and if necessary, have it professionally serviced. Most importantly, don’t forget to change your filters.

Spring cleaning and decluttering

Spring is the perfect time to deep clean your house and declutter. Use this time to freshen up your carpets, donate clothes, and toss expired products. This will make your home not only smell and look good, but it will also help to know where everything is in the event that something happens.
