Canada is Warming at Twice the Rate of the Rest of the World. Why?
A study entitled Canada’s Changing Climate Report, commissioned by Environment and Climate Change Canada, revealed recently that Canada is warming at twice the rate of the rest of the world, with Northern Canada experiencing the most profound changes.
This has also brought increase in precipitation (including snow), weather more risk-inclined towards fires, and water supply shortages. These dangerous changes can lead to more fires, more flooding, and more natural disasters overall.
The big question here is: why?
The Earth warms faster nearest the poles, and as the Arctic warms quickly, so does Canada. In addition, land warms faster than oceans, and Canada has a huge land mass.
Another important factor to consider is the fact that Canada has some of the highest carbon emissions in the world, much higher than other developed countries: this is due to our travel, the cars we drive, food we consume, and large emissions from industries like oil and gas.
While the temperature difference seems slight, the devastation can be catastrophic if changes aren’t enacted to reduce the increased warming.
Calculate your carbon footprint, discuss with your family ways you can treat the earth kinder. Everyone can make a difference.
